COUTI-OUTI BRANGUS

The “Burri-Buri” Brangus Stud, No 19, was founded in 1962. Up until this time the “Couti-Outi” Angus Stud and commercial cattle operation, was very successfully run by the late Mr. W.J. (Bill) Geddes. “Couti-Outi” Angus Stud cattle competed very successfully at Central Queensland Shows, and also in Brisbane, as did the prime and carcase cattle for many years during the early 1950’s and 60’s. In 1962, the coveted R.J. BUCHANAN MEMORIAL, for the most successful Angus fat cattle exhibitor in the Commonwealth, was won by the late Mr. Geddes. It was this herd of Angus Breeders that lay the foundation for the “Couti-Outi” Brangus of today.

Three quarter bred Brahman bulls were purchased from “The Orient” Ingham, in 1962, to begin a very successful cross breeding program. The Brangus cattle now, were being bred with sleek coats, the tougher doing ability of the Brahman, whilst keeping the good conformation and carcase qualities of the Angus, and were being turned off at heavier weights. “Burri-Buri” Brangus returned to the show ring in 1965, with many successes in stud and fat cattle classes, and has continued showing to the present day. The stud prefix was changed from “Burri-Buri” back to “Couti-Outi” in the early 1970’s.

“Couti-Outi”, run by Lawson & Linda Geddes and family, is situated on the coast about 150kms north of Rockhampton. Breeders are run on coastal forest country in conjunction with marine plain country. Bullocks are all grass fattened on marine plains and turned off at 2 1\2 years, to meet EU markets and Jap Ox. Bulls are retained from the top 3% of the male calves, and are chosen on length, fleshing, and the conformation attributes of them and their mothers, which make up the essential characteristics of breeding a good bull. Fresh blood is constantly being used, by sourcing Angus, Brahman, and Brangus Bulls, and drafting females to suit these sires. One of the wonderful attributes of Brangus is that you can breed them to suit any country.
